Where fire, color, and craftsmanship come together to create one-of-a-kind glass art.

There is something undeniably captivating about glass. It is both delicate and enduring, timeless yet constantly evolving. It holds light, reflects color, and captures movement in a way few other materials can. At Studio MLJ, glass is more than a medium, it is a living canvas shaped by heat, precision, and imagination.

Welcome to the world of Mark Lenn Johnson, an award-winning glass artist based in Lexington, Kentucky. Here, each piece is thoughtfully crafted by hand, inspired by tradition, and brought to life through the transformative power of fire.

A Journey Into Glass

Every artist has a beginning, and Mark Lenn Johnson’s creative path is rooted in exploration. Like many makers, his early artistic work started with materials that allowed for experimentation and form. Over time, however, Mark was drawn toward something more challenging—something that demanded both technical mastery and artistic intuition.

Glass offered that challenge.

Unlike other materials, glass does not simply “hold still” while it is being shaped. It moves, shifts, stretches, and responds to temperature and time. Working with glass requires patience and control, but also a willingness to adapt. It is a craft where skill is built not only through knowledge, but through repetition, observation, and respect for the process.

For Mark, glassmaking became more than a creative hobby, it became a calling.

Studio MLJ: A Place Where Art Comes Alive

Located in Lexington’s historic East End, Studio MLJ is nestled within The Artists’ Village, a space that celebrates creative expression and community. The studio itself is where ideas are sparked, colors are tested, and new pieces are born.

The atmosphere is both focused and inspiring. The tools of the trade are everywhere: kilns, burners, molds, and carefully arranged glass rods and sheets waiting to be transformed. Here, the work is hands-on and personal. Every piece created in the studio carries the mark of the maker, an authenticity that cannot be replicated by machines or mass production.

Studio visits are available by appointment, offering collectors and art lovers the chance to experience the craft in its natural environment.

The Process: From Heat to Art

To understand handmade glass art is to understand the process behind it. Glassmaking is a combination of science and storytelling. Each method requires specialized knowledge, unique tools, and an artist’s touch.

At Studio MLJ, Mark works across multiple glassmaking techniques, including:

Blown Glass

Blown glass is one of the most iconic and visually dramatic forms of glassmaking. Using a blowpipe, molten glass is gathered from a furnace and shaped while it remains hot and pliable. Through controlled breath, movement, and shaping tools, the glass expands and takes form, sometimes becoming a vessel, a sculptural shape, or a functional work of art.

Blown glass demands timing and rhythm. Every moment matters, because once glass cools, it begins to harden, and the opportunity to shape it disappears.

Kiln-Formed Glass

Kiln-formed glass is created through heat and transformation inside a kiln. Sheets of glass are layered, fused, slumped, or molded into new shapes. This process allows for bold experimentation with pattern, texture, and color.

Kiln-forming also provides a different kind of artistic control. Instead of working with fast-moving molten glass, the artist designs the composition in advance and allows heat and gravity to complete the final transformation.

Lampwork Glass Jewelry

Lampwork is where wearable art comes to life. Using a torch flame, glass rods are melted and shaped into beads, pendants, and intricate jewelry components. This technique requires an incredible level of precision, as small details must be crafted in a matter of seconds.

The result is jewelry that feels both personal and timeless, pieces that capture the magic of glass in a form that can be worn and cherished daily.

Why Every Piece Is One-of-a-Kind

In a world filled with mass-produced items, handmade glass stands apart.

No two pieces can ever be exactly the same. Even when using the same materials, colors, and techniques, glass behaves differently each time. Temperature variations, movement, and the natural flow of molten glass ensure that every work becomes its own original creation.

This uniqueness is part of the beauty.

When you purchase a piece from Studio MLJ, you are not buying something that exists in hundreds of copies. You are collecting something rare—crafted with intention, shaped by hand, and created in a specific moment in time.

Each piece carries subtle variations, small details, and natural characteristics that make it truly individual. It is art that cannot be duplicated, because it is born from a process that is always alive.

Inspiration: Color, Light, and the World Around Us

Mark’s work is deeply influenced by color and movement. Glass interacts with light in a way that makes every piece feel dynamic. A vessel may appear calm and subtle in one room, then come alive with brilliance when sunlight hits its surface. A jewelry piece may shift in tone depending on the angle of view.

This interaction is not accidental, it is part of the artistic intention.

Inspiration often comes from the world around us: natural forms, shifting skies, water reflections, and even the emotional response created by color itself. Glass has a way of capturing feeling. A single shade can evoke warmth, depth, calmness, or energy.

Mark’s goal is to create work that speaks without words—pieces that feel alive, expressive, and meaningful to those who collect them.

Collecting Handmade Glass: More Than a Purchase

Handmade glass art is not simply décor. It is an investment in craftsmanship, tradition, and artistic legacy.

Collectors often describe the feeling of owning handmade glass as something deeper than owning an object. It becomes part of a home’s atmosphere, part of a personal story, and sometimes even a family heirloom passed down through generations.

A glass vessel can become the centerpiece of a space. A pendant can become a signature piece worn for years. These works are not created to be temporary, they are made to last, both in physical quality and emotional value.

Caring for Your Glass Art

Proper care ensures that handmade glass remains beautiful for a lifetime.

Here are a few simple recommendations for caring for Studio MLJ pieces:

  • Handle with care and avoid placing glass near the edge of shelves or counters.
  • Clean gently using a soft cloth. For vessels, mild soap and warm water are typically safe.
  • Avoid extreme temperature changes, especially for functional pieces.
  • Store jewelry carefully, ideally in a soft pouch or jewelry box to prevent scratches.

With basic care, glass art remains stunning for decades, retaining its brilliance and character.
